CMYK or PMS – which printing method suits your packaging?

When printing packaging, the choice of color plays a more significant role than you might think. But should you use CMYK or PMS? The choice depends on factors such as the design, color requirements, and the material you select.

CMYK – for vibrant and detailed designs

CMYK stands for Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Key (black). By combining the four process colors in varying halftone values, the printing press creates a wide range of colors and shades.

Therefore, CMYK is well-suited for packaging featuring elements such as photographs, illustrations, gradients, and detailed designs.

PMS – when a specific color takes center stage

PMS (Pantone Matching System) uses defined spot colors with specific color codes and formulations. It provides a clear color reference when a particular color plays a key role in the brand—such as in a logo or a distinctive brand color.

At the same time, the material affects the appearance of the color. The cardboard’s color, surface, and absorbency can alter the visual result. Therefore, you need to consider both color and material when choosing a printing solution.
