Paper instead of plastic – LTH students explore future packaging solutions

Can existing plastic packaging be replaced with paper-based solutions? That is the question master's students from LTH are investigating in a project together with FrontPac. The students recently visited our production facility to gain a closer insight into how we manufacture various types of packaging. During the visit, they saw how materials, design, and production work together when we develop a packaging solution.

Paper instead of plastic - the students' case study

The students are enrolled in the Packaging Logistics master's program at LTH. In the project, they will identify existing plastic-based packaging solutions and investigate whether paper can serve as an alternative.

To find viable alternatives, students need to consider several aspects. Material properties, packaging functionality, product requirements, and the production process all play an important role. By comparing different materials and solutions, we can therefore gain a better understanding of when paper works and when other materials are more suitable.

When can paper be an alternative to plastic?

Paper can be an interesting alternative to plastic. Paper-based packaging, for example, can offer different possibilities regarding material selection, design, and recycling solutions. Moreover, paper is a renewable resource.

There are, of course, situations where plastic or other materials may be an alternative, where paper is not the optimal solution. By comparing different materials and solutions, we can therefore gain a better understanding of when paper works instead of plastic.

From theory to production

For us at FrontPac, it is valuable to give students insight into the reality behind packaging development. During a visit to our production facilities, they see more than just finished packaging; they also observe how material choices, design, and manufacturing processes influence the final solution. At the same time, collaborating with students provides us with fresh perspectives and the opportunity to engage with their ideas and questions.

The packaging industry is constantly evolving. That is why we believe in sharing knowledge and fostering close collaboration between educational programs and companies.
